The short answer
Add words when the reader is missing an explanation, example or condition. Cut them when they repeat what is already clear. A planning estimate can help commission writing, but there is no universal article length that makes an answer useful or gives it a search entitlement.
The counter is asking the wrong question
Your guide answers a practical question in a few clear sections. A tool says it should be longer. The writer adds a history lesson, repeats the introduction and turns a short answer into a page that takes longer to use.
The counter has improved. The reader's experience may have become worse. Before asking for another 500 words, identify the question those words are supposed to answer.
Completeness is about the decision, not the page length
A guide to choosing a redirect or a canonical needs enough explanation to distinguish their purposes and consequences. A short definition may not be enough. A long history of search engines may add very little.
List what the reader needs to decide safely: the options, the conditions that change the answer and a practical example. Add detail where one of those is missing. If the promised decision is already supported, a larger word count is not an improvement by itself.
A worked example
Suppose a guide explains when an old page should send visitors to a replacement and when duplicate versions can remain accessible.
Where it goes wrong
The brief demands a long article, so the writer adds repeated definitions and general SEO advice before reaching the decision.
What to do instead
Explain the two intended behaviours, show a relevant example and identify the checks needed before implementation. Add a separate deeper reference only where it helps.
The article can be short or long depending on the explanation required. Its length is a consequence of useful coverage, not a substitute for it.
Examples usually earn their space better than filler
A specific example can explain a distinction faster than several abstract paragraphs. Show the customer's situation, why the tempting approach fails and what a better decision would consider. Keep hypothetical examples clearly hypothetical.
Definitions and technical terms should appear where the reader needs them. Explain the term once, in plain language, rather than repeatedly using it to make the article sound authoritative. Link to a deeper explanation when it would interrupt the main answer.
Use the final edit to remove hesitation
Read the draft as a potential customer. Which paragraphs help you understand the problem? Which make the same point again? Is an important limitation buried near the end? Can you find a relevant next step without reading every line?
Keep useful depth where the subject needs it. Cut repeated setup and sales language that delays the answer. Google explicitly rejects an ideal page length for generative search; the more practical editorial standard is whether the reader leaves with the explanation the page promised.

Questions to ask your agency
- Which meaningful question is still unanswered?
- Would an example explain this better than more general text?
- Are we repeating the introduction or sales pitch?
- Can the reader find the decision and its conditions?
Common questions
Is a short article always better?
No. A short answer can omit essential information. Choose depth around the topic and reader's decision, then remove repetition rather than necessary explanation.
Can a brief still include an estimated length?
Yes, as a production estimate. Treat it as flexible guidance for the assignment, not as a universal ranking requirement or a reason to add filler.
